“If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands?” – Milton Berle
My Mother married at a very young age and became an “instant” Mother. I came in the “package” with my Dad, since my birth mother died ten days after I was born. Instant motherhood is a lot more complicated than instant oatmeal or instant coffee. Although she was young and seemingly unprepared to be a Mother, she learned the ropes quickly and performed wonderfully well; especially considering that I had been spoiled beyond measure by my grandmother for 2 1/2 years.
We lost my Mother on March 24, 2011. The loss was profound, but I am eternally grateful for the love she showed me and the lessons she taught me. Those lessons weave in and out of my memory and are forever a part of who I am.
I was fortunate enough to share many “Mother’s Days” with my mom, and over the years, I learned some important lessons in making your mom feel special and appreciated.
Here’s a few Mother’s Day tips from me so you don’t have to learn from experience like I did.
- Visit or call your Mother
I’m not a mom but trust me I know what mothers want. She wants to both talk to you and see you. If you can’t do both at least try one.
- Thank all the Moms in your life
Mothers, grandmothers, aunts, friends and guardians all appreciate a kind word around Mother’s Day.
- Find out what your mother wants and get it for her.
Remember this is the lady that fed, clothed, protected and sheltered you. Get her something she wants.
If she has a leather item on her list, I can give you some advice on this gift as well.
