No. 1 Grip Leather Travel Bag in Vintage Brown Steerhide

Timeless design perfect for weekend travels or everyday excursions – this leather travel bag enhances any adventure.

If you boarded a train during the late 1800’s, your travel bag would have been called a grip. A grip was not a bag you checked to the baggage car or entrusted to the care of someone else. It was a personal bag kept with you at all times.

– Colonel Littleton

Solid brass hardware, our unique lever-action buckling mechanism, and an unusual strap arrangement make the Colonel’s No. 1 Grip a travel bag with “instant” heritage – not to be checked, and not to be confused with all the other bags out there. Your bag is so unique that we’ve placed a serial-numbered brass plate on the inside front of the bag.

Made in the Col. Littleton Workshop in Lynnville, TN, this weekender bag is composed of vegetable-tanned vintage brown polished leather for strength, while the flap and ends of the bag are made of our dry-milled leather to give it character and softness.

What Does it Carry?

This bag opens wide and packs easily. There’s plenty of room to carry everything you need for an overnight stay, or as your personal carry-on bag for extended trips.

Product packaging includes a protective cotton canvas drawstring bag with the Col. Littleton Cameo Logo.

  1. I ordered this bag a few weeks ago. First, I received it ahead of the expected delivery. Secondly, the packaging was perfect. Lastly, the bag is first class. I used it this past weekend for a three day trip to New York city. It was big enough to hold everything I needed, and still small enough to carry on the plane. Between Charleston and NY, I received no less than 3 compliments on my new bag. I cannot recommend this bag more enthusiastically.

  2. I feel as if I need to offer a follow up review as my original review wasn’t quite as strongly worded as I would like. To be clear, looking at this bag online, it seemed to me as if it owed more to the 1960s than the 1860s (something to do with the soft handles). Looking at the pictures alone, it seemed as if the No. 3 or 5 were out of its league. That’s simply not the case. Get this in your hands and it looks and feels as if it came right off of someone’s lap in a steam engine driven train at the turn of the last century. The design looks and feels classic, an American original. It has a great feel in the hands, is comparatively light but extraordinarily sturdy. Its latch and wide mouth make it, I think, the easiest to pack of all the bags. It’s really easy to underestimate this bag given the price and its humble look on the website. Frankly, it’s as sophisticated looking, as useful, as packable, as comfortable to carry as any bag on the market (and I have many of them). Moreover, it simply makes you feel good when you carry it. I think that’s what Col. Littleton was going for in all his bag designs. Don’t skip this bag.

  3. It is timeless. You will stand out and blend in to the crowd while carrying this bag waiting for any train from 1850-2022.

Our Warranty

We are committed to producing quality, handcrafted products that showcase our time-honored standards of excellence and deep respect for the Americana tradition. Col. Littleton products go through rigorous testing and numerous quality inspections before being shipped to our customers. Should you receive a Col. Littleton product that is defective in materials or workmanship, you can count on us to make it right. Our guarantee is limited to the cost of the product itself. It also does not cover normal wear and tear. We feel if you just plain “wore it out,” you got your money’s worth. Also, we cannot be responsible for an item which has suffered through alteration, damage due to improper cleaning, improper use, mishandling or accident. If we made a mistake in personalizing your product or if the product is defective in materials or workmanship, of course we’ll replace it. Otherwise, personalized products are not returnable.

Our Leather

Leather is a passion for me. There are more kinds of leather and leather processing out there than you can shake a stick at. You can mold leather into just about any shape or form. You can make every hide look just alike. You can dye it green, blue or even pink. You can apply a finish, coat it, spray it or make it look slick and shiny. That’s not what we’re about at Col. Littleton. To me the beauty is in the naturalness of the leather. People always comment to me about the special “feel” of our leather and how it becomes even more beautiful after it has some wear on it. It’s all about our leather process. When you buy Col. Littleton leather goods, you’re buying, for the most part, full-grain American vegetable-tanned steerhide that has received a minimum of alteration. We don’t apply a finish to hide character markings. The way I see it, every marking tells a story and covering them robs the piece of its life and character.

Our Craftsmanship

I see a real resurgence in the country today for products made in America. Our focus is to design and create products that speak to the time-honored traditions that have made this country great such as handmade craftsmanship, authentic rich leathers and quality workmanship. There’s a nostalgic feel about the products we make . . . most of them could have been made 100 years ago and many are made using turn-of-the-20th-century methodology and machinery. Our products are true Americana; forged as our forefathers intended by people who care and take pride in making a beautiful product.
