No. 1 Grip Travel Bag American Buffalo

If you had boarded a train during the time period of the 1870’s to the 1940’s, your travel bag would have been called a grip. A grip was not a bag you checked to the baggage car or entrusted to the care of someone else. It was a personal bag kept with you at all times. Likewise, the Colonel’s No. 1 Grip Travel Bag American Buffalo leather is designed as a carry-on-bag and not a bag to be checked.

The bag has plenty of room to carry everything you need for an overnight stay, or it serves well as your personal carry-on bag for extended trips. It opens wide and packs easily. The Colonel packed his No. 1 Grip with a pair of khakis, two folded shirts, shoes, socks, two tee shirts, two boxer shorts, a bandana, a belt and his GP1 Shave Kit. Solid brass hardware, our unique lever-action buckling mechanism, and an unusual strap arrangement make this a bag that will not be confused with all the other bags out there. It comes with “instant” heritage, because it looks as if it could have been inherited from your Grandfather.

11″H x 19″W x 10.5″D.

Adjustable shoulder strap. Each bag has a serial-numbered brass plate on the inside front of the bag. The brass oval plate on the front flap may be personalized with three initials. Made in our Col. Littleton Workshop of American Buffalo Leather.

No. 1 Grip Travel Bag American Buffalo Leather Shoulder Strap Length: 36.5″-44.5″

Bag Weight: 4.3lbs.

American Buffalo – “Expect a leather that is unapologetically rugged with more character, nicks, scrapes and variations in color.” ~ Colonel (Read more about American Buffalo Leather here)

  1. I just received my No.1 Grip travel bag. It’s everything I hoped it would be! Excellent construction and attention to detail. I’m really glad I found this treasure!

  2. I ordered this bag through my local retailer in Fayetteville, AR (Walker Brothers). First thing out of the bag is that its beautiful, simple, and has a timeless look and feel. I have wanted a No. 1 Grip, I’m so glad I finally pulled the trigger and got one! For a smaller overnight bag this is perfect. I hope to pass this bag down one day… just need to give my kids the same initials.

  3. As beautiful a leather and design as you could wish for. Bravo Colonel and Team.

  4. I was so stoked. I wanted the 37 Satchel as a second briefcase but I couldn’t put a basic 3″ red rope in it, so I upgraded to a No 1 grip.

I used it this week as an overnight bag. I barely got a pair of dress shoes ( size 8) , a shaving kit ( brand name O or F) , two dress shirts, two ties, underwear and socks. It took me several minutes of puzzle packing to get it to where I could snap the lock and make sure the flaps were all closed.

Love , love the craftsmanship, but I wish : 1) it was lined, so I don’t stain the leather with a leaky something, 2) it was 2 inches wider and 2 inches taller.

I was hoping to buy my wife the No 3 grip as a Christmas gift, but I have to double check the dimensions.

  5. Beyond stellar! I knew I wanted a No 1. grip but wanted to be able to see and feel the difference between the buffalo and cowhide versions. I also wanted to be able to choose between several specimens once I decided which leather version I wanted. The staff was excellent and patient allowing me to take my time, and finally ensuring I was pleased with my choice. The hardest part was letting it go so it could be packaged up.

  6. I purchased this during my fall 2016 pilgrimage to Lynnville, TN, along with the No. 3 Grip and several other pieces. I asked for them all in American Buffalo, and very pleased I did, for its character, its feel, its rugged look is the best. The No. 1 is for shorter trips than the No. 3, but it is just as distinctive and lovely to use. All of these creations are wonderfully useful, of course, but they are also aesthetic wonders. Mine are never stored away, for there is such pleasure at just looking at them!

  7. I personally was torn between the no.1 and the no.3 grip. But in the end, it was the design that appealed to me more. My advice for anyone who is interested in purchasing this product or similar is to ignore the price. It is a long term investment with an equally long life span. Its unique design will turn heads, initiate conversations, and open doors to opportunities that you may have not always had.

    My personal pros:
    1. Excellent craftsmanship
    2. Spacious enough to fit several books and articles of clothing inside
    3. Includes both handle and sling carry
    4. Sturdy
    5. Fashionable and functional to fit under any scenario

  8. World class bag with the overall design and brass accents really making it rock. But be aware, as stated, the American Buffalo model varies in color, so it most likely won’t look like the website color. Ultimately I received a model more brown and returned it with no problem, and kept the steer hide model I had, which is exactly like website photo.

  9. This is the PERFECT gym bag and the only gym bag I’ll ever need, it fits everything I need to take with me and does so in a beautiful way. Exceptionally well made just like very other piece I own from the Colonel, the customer service is second to none!

  10. I purchased the grip No. 1 for a trip to the Canadian Rockies because I needed a carry on smaller than the luggage pieces I owned. After several calls to Charlene and some pictures she sent me, I made my decision and it is the perfect bag for carry on. It will hold a f all change of clothes, a jacket, the great Buffalo No. 2 shave kit as well as a few other items. This is a perfect addition to my other Colonel Littleton products and I also received many compliments on the trip from fellow passengers. Great bag and exceptional service.

  11. A stunning travel companion!
With the help of the ever-friendly Charlene, I purchased a No. 1 Grip in Rugged American Buffalo. Charlene sent pictures of the 5 American Buffalo bags she had in stock, with one of them being from the Rugged collection. I toiled over my decision, and chose the Rugged Buffalo version (serial number 002!)
The pictures did not prepare me for the breathtaking beauty of this masterpiece. The bag’s character rating was off the charts right out of the box. The scars and grain variation of the Rugged Buffalo hide were exactly what I was looking for, with the carmel brown color exuding the warmth of an old friend. It looks as though it has traveled the world! As a final touch, the Colonel uses antiqued brass hardware on the Rugged collection, which compliments these hides perfectly.
So, the day after receiving the Grip, I packed it up and took a short overnight road trip out in the country. The bag packs easily and holds plenty for a night or two.

What else can I say? My collection of the Colonel’s fine goods continues to grow and I want to send a big “Thank You” to Charlene for her patience and help with my selection.

Our Story

We are committed to producing quality, handcrafted products that showcase our time-honored standards of excellence and deep respect for the Americana tradition. Col. Littleton products go through rigorous testing and numerous quality inspections before being shipped to our customers. Should you receive a Col. Littleton product that is defective in materials or workmanship, you can count on us to make it right. Our guarantee is limited to the cost of the product itself. It also does not cover normal wear and tear. We feel if you just plain “wore it out,” you got your money’s worth. Also, we cannot be responsible for an item which has suffered through alteration, damage due to improper cleaning, improper use, mishandling or accident. If we made a mistake in personalizing your product or if the product is defective in materials or workmanship, of course we’ll replace it. Otherwise, personalized products are not returnable.

Leather is a passion for me. There are more kinds of leather and leather processing out there than you can shake a stick at. You can mold leather into just about any shape or form. You can make every hide look just alike. You can dye it green, blue or even pink. You can apply a finish, coat it, spray it or make it look slick and shiny. That’s not what we’re about at Col. Littleton. To me the beauty is in the naturalness of the leather. People always comment to me about the special “feel” of our leather and how it becomes even more beautiful after it has some wear on it. It’s all about our leather process. When you buy Col. Littleton leather goods, you’re buying, for the most part, full-grain American vegetable-tanned steer hide that has received a minimum of alteration. We don’t apply a finish to hide character markings. The way I see it, every marking tells a story and covering them robs the piece of its life and character.

I see a real resurgence in the country today for products made in America. Our focus is to design and create products that speak to the time-honored traditions that have made this country great such as handmade craftsmanship, authentic rich leathers and quality workmanship. There’s a nostalgic feel about the products we make . . . most of them could have been made 100 years ago and many are made using turn-of-the-20th-century methodology and machinery. Our products are true Americana; forged as our forefathers intended by people who care and take pride in making a beautiful product.
