“Backpacks come in all shapes, sizes and materials . . . most are obviously for casual pursuits.  When I decided to design the first backpack for the Col. Littleton line, I settled on a more classic and refined shape and a design that would complement a professional wardrobe and environment.

“I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with standing out from the crowd a little bit; so to help in that regard, my final step was adding two eye-catching nickel-finished cinch buckle closures.  By the way, you will receive a special Col. Littleton sticker in the front pocket of the backpack that I believe tells the whole story.”

– Colonel Littleton

“Combining two of our classic, unparalleled, full-grain leathers . . . deep, rich Tobacco Brown, American Buffalo and Vintage Brown American Steerhide . . . and accenting them with nickel-finished hardware gave me the look I was after for the Rover Backpack,” says the Colonel. Exceptional leather is always in style, and our leather only gets better with time and use. This backpack will be part of your daily journey for a long, long time.

If your business includes a lot of work-related travel, you can carry your laptop with ease. The backpack fits under most airline seats, so it is easily accessible and never has to leave your sight. The streamlined, minimalistic, vintage-look design complements professional attire and will certainly catch the attention of fellow travelers and business colleagues.

“It was not my intention to laden this backpack with an overload of bulky pockets, holders for water bottles, unnecessary strapping or anything that would detract from the clean lines, professional appeal and pure design of the product.”

– Colonel Littleton

The Rover Leather Backpack has a convenient front pocket (5”H x 7 ¼”W) with extra storage space behind the pocket for your phone, etc.  Underneath the front flap there’s a pocket for pens, business cards, tickets, receipts or whatever. The roomy interior provides a dedicated compartment for your laptop (up to 16”) as well as plenty of space for your portfolio, files, tablet, and everyday work essentials.

The Leather Backpack is Serial Numbered under the front flap and may be personalized with three initials on the front flap. Product packaging includes a protective cotton canvas dust bag with the Col. Littleton Cameo Logo. Meticulously handcrafted in the Col. Littleton Workshop, Lynnville, TN USA.

  1. Merriam-Webster’s, Cambridge’s and Oxford’s Dictionaries need to create a new superlative for the Colonel’s work, because “Wow” simply does not do him justice. A long-time buyer of CL’s art, I just received my No. 9 Rover in tobacco brown buffalo. Many a backpack have I, but this one has moved to the forefront immediately. The previous review highlights many of the features, so I will provide my own perspectives here.

Overall Thoughts: Very spacious and can be used for either business or personal travel. The backpack is very accessible, and the custom latches make it easy to maneuver. The openness allows one to organize it as needed, and the design is very well thought out. One thing to consider are the hooks used to extend / shorten the shoulder straps. When shouldering the bag, they can catch on to one’s clothing. I would NOT recommend bending the hooks as it will void the warranty; rather, consider either using a commercially available universal shoulder pad or a piece of soft Velcro to cover it and you will be fine.

When traveling, I now have a wide option of CL bags / briefcases to consider based on the look and presence I want to exude. For example, I match the No. 9 Rover with the No. 5 Grip (in tobacco brown buffalo, of course) and the No. 33 Notebook for extensive travel (more than three nights). I can use the No. 9 Rover solo for an overnight stay (packing carefully depending on the occasion), and can get by with the No. 9 Rover and the No. 1 Grip (in vintage brown) as needed for a 1-3 night excursion. If the No. 1 Grip were available in tobacco brown buffalo, then perfection. That said, since I also have the No. 1 Leather Duffle in Tobacco Brown Buffalo, I think I am there!

Many thanks to Miss Judy and Miss Tina at the Colonel’s shop for all of their assistance! And a special thanks to the Colonel for his magnificent insights in the Americana art form! You have a customer for life!!! Happy holidays and wishing all a prosperous New Year!!!

  2. This is truly a remarkable backpack with a distinct visual look that is incredibly appealing. While it may sound a bit over-the-top, I have found myself staring at it, just because the design is so eye-catching and balanced. Whenever I have it sitting down somewhere while working and walk back over to it, just looking at it as I approach feels satisfying. The balance and coloration of the design make it unlike any other backpack I’ve seen. And like the other of the Colonel’s bags/briefcases that feature this particular color scheme (the dark tobacco Buffalo trimmed with the brown Steerhide), it has a strong, sturdy kind of elegance, but without being fussy. The claims that it can exist happily in both a professional or casual setting are totally correct.

The double cinch buckle closure to the main compartment is not only visually appealing but wonderfully effective (and much more fun than a traditional zipper). It’s quick and easy to get in and out, and works even with one hand. On my previous (also “high-end”) backpack, I found the zipper was the one thing that most often caused problems: the pull eventually broke (and had to be replaced), it would get stuck on misaligned teeth, or something inside the backpack (or even one of the inner pocket meshes) would get caught in the teeth. Not having any zipper at all removes this problem, but the fold over top and cinch buckles still provide excellent protection to what’s inside, and the cinch is so much faster than other leather backpacks that use a typical latching strap.

Although the backpack has a lot of space, it does not have the myriad organizer pockets that many backpack designs today have. This does not bother me, but for those who are used to segmenting their gear into the eight or more separate pockets on other high-end backpacks (as my previous backpack had), it would be a change. The back straps also don’t have any extra padding found on most backpacks, though I have not found this myself to be a problem. The two-part strap design (with the turning axis as the pieces connect) arguably makes it fit under the arms more naturally than a typical strap does.

This is a very impressive bag, made with all the expected Col. Littleton quality standards, and I highly recommend it.

Our Warranty

We are committed to producing quality, handcrafted products that showcase our time-honored standards of excellence and deep respect for the Americana tradition. Col. Littleton products go through rigorous testing and numerous quality inspections before being shipped to our customers. Should you receive a Col. Littleton product that is defective in materials or workmanship, you can count on us to make it right. Our guarantee is limited to the cost of the product itself. It also does not cover normal wear and tear. We feel if you just plain “wore it out,” you got your money’s worth. Also, we cannot be responsible for an item which has suffered through alteration, damage due to improper cleaning, improper use, mishandling or accident. If we made a mistake in personalizing your product or if the product is defective in materials or workmanship, of course we’ll replace it. Otherwise, personalized products are not returnable.

Our Leather

Leather is a passion for me. There are more kinds of leather and leather processing out there than you can shake a stick at. You can mold leather into just about any shape or form. You can make every hide look just alike. You can dye it green, blue or even pink. You can apply a finish, coat it, spray it or make it look slick and shiny. That’s not what we’re about at Col. Littleton. To me the beauty is in the naturalness of the leather. People always comment to me about the special “feel” of our leather and how it becomes even more beautiful after it has some wear on it. It’s all about our leather process. When you buy Col. Littleton leather goods, you’re buying, for the most part, full-grain American vegetable-tanned steerhide that has received a minimum of alteration. We don’t apply a finish to hide character markings. The way I see it, every marking tells a story and covering them robs the piece of its life and character.

Our Craftsmanship

I see a real resurgence in the country today for products made in America. Our focus is to design and create products that speak to the time-honored traditions that have made this country great such as handmade craftsmanship, authentic rich leathers and quality workmanship. There’s a nostalgic feel about the products we make . . . most of them could have been made 100 years ago and many are made using turn-of-the-20th-century methodology and machinery. Our products are true Americana; forged as our forefathers intended by people who care and take pride in making a beautiful product.
